Job Title: Assistant Signal Maintainer

Reports to: Signals Supervisor / Manager of Signals

Department: Signals

Reports out of: Dependant on Job Bid

Job Grade: Unionized

Hours of work: Dependant on Job Bid

Toronto Terminals Railway, also known as TTR, maintains the Union Station Rail Corridor (USRC), working alongside railways and transportation companies like VIA Rail, CN, CP, and GO Transit. TTR has been in existence for over a hundred years, providing construction, operations and maintenance services, around the clock on a daily basis.

Assistant Signal Maintainers perform track signal maintenance and repair duties and other such duties that may be assigned.

Primary Duties:

  • To comply with all federal and applied railway rules, laws, guidelines and standards and all TTR policies and procedures;
  • Read and Interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics and electrical code specifications;
  • Install, examine, replace, or repair electrical receptacles, switch boxes, conduits, feeders, and other electrical components;
  • Maintain, repair and test switch gear, transformers, hydraulic and pneumatic electrical control systems, regulators and reactors;
  • Troubleshoot, maintain and repair industrial, electrical and electronic control systems and other related devices;
  • Attends safety training and participates in on-going training related to the position;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which can include working various days, hours and shifts; including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays;
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, ensuring safety in work and rail operations;
  • Ability to use prudent judgment and problem solving skills to make reasonable and appropriate decisions and recommendations that ensures the safety of operations;
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships and act in a professional manner.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Positions in this class require: working at heights, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, confined space and repetitive motions;
  • Ability to stay alert and aware of surrounding operating environment;
  • Ability to stand and sit for an extended length of time and walk long distances for long periods of time on uneven terrain to include railroad ballast;
  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions and intense noise levels.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver's license (G Class);
  • Must be able to read and comprehend regulations and instructions as well as possess good verbal communication skills;
  • High school Diploma or G.E.D, Diploma or Degree in Electronics, Electrical, or Software engineering an asset. Experience in a construction or maintenance field an asset.
